Laser Engineer – High-Power Spectral Beam Combining

Ibsen Photonics

The Mission: Build the Next Generation of SBC Systems

Ibsen Photonics develops Spectral Beam Combining (SBC) modules for high-power laser architectures, based on our in-house transmission gratings. We are looking for a Laser Engineer to join the High-Power Beam Combining team and contribute across design, assembly, and experimental optimisation of these modules — working closely with colleagues and international partners.

What you will do

  • Design and assemble compact SBC modules based on Ibsen's transmission gratings, accounting for optical beam paths, thermal effects, and mechanical constraints
  • Optimise optical alignment, mechanical stability, and thermal management at high power loads in iterative design–experiment–optimise cycles
  • Characterise beam quality during power scaling, including M², wavefront sensing, and spectral analysis
  • Support sourcing of optical and mechanical components and the transition from experimental prototypes to scalable, volume-ready designs
  • Collaborate with internal teams and international partners, including occasional overseas visits for joint prototyping and testing

What you bring

You are a proactive problem-solver who thrives in a "build-test-learn" environment.

Ideally, you possess

  • MSc or PhD in optics, photonics, laser physics, or a related field
  • Documented laboratory experience with high-power optics and/or lasers
  • Knowledge of high-power-capable optical design practices, including thermal lensing, runaway effects, and their mitigation, as well as Gaussian optics and beam propagation
  • Knowledge of opto-mechanical design practices for high-power devices
  • Hands-on experience with precise free-space and/or fibre optical alignment and experimental troubleshooting
  • Experience with beam quality measurement and analysis
  • Professional proficiency in English

Nice to have

  • Experience with SBC or CBC techniques
  • Mechanical design of tight-tolerance devices and familiarity with mechanical CAD
  • Experience transitioning prototypes toward volume production
  • Proficiency in optical simulation tools (e.g. Zemax)

Security and export control: This position is subject to defence-related export control and security requirements. You must be able to obtain the required Danish security clearance.

Why join Ibsen Photonics?

  • Visible Impact: Your will work directly on the core technology and design behind next generation of SBC modules, with real autonomy over how you solve the tasks you are given. Your results will carry through from lab prototypes to finished products supplied to international customers
  • Working culture: A supportive, flat organisation with short decision paths, open knowledge sharing, and a healthy work-life balance.
