Laboratory/Research Assistant to the Bio Studio Team at BioInnovation Institute

BioInnovation Institute (BII)

Are you happiest at the bench, turning a demanding assay into data a team can build on?

Come join us at the BioInnovation Institute (BII) in Nørrebro as a Laboratory/Research Assistant on EVADE project within our company-creation program, Bio Studio.

Your Opportunity to Join BII’s Bio Studio Program!

The BioInnovation Institute (BII) is Europe’s leading innovation institute backed by the Novo Nordisk Foundation and many significant industry partners. Its mission is to bring science to life through the successful BII innovation platform, accelerating innovation’s journey to the market. BII supports collaborative, interdisciplinary innovation across Life Sciences and Deep Tech, helping transform cutting-edge research into viable companies so that new discoveries can deliver real impact for people and society.

Bio Studio is BII’s company-creation program that aims to build (life) science start-ups based on world-class research. Bio Studio projects are three-year grant-funded projects sourced from leading researchers worldwide. Selected for their scientific novelty, commercial potential, and societal and/or health impact, each project is driven by a dedicated team based at BII in Copenhagen, led by an Entrepreneur in Residence (EiR). Teams have access to laboratory facilities, office space, and BII’s network of industry experts, investors, and advisors to support scientific development, IP, commercialization, and fundraising.

A career at BII allows you to work with world-leading entrepreneurial scientists in a position where you will have a substantial chance to impact your job and the opportunity to develop your bio entrepreneurial skills.

About The Project And The Role

As a Laboratory/Research Assistant you will become part of EVADE, a project developing a peptibody (peptide-Fc fusion) against the fungal pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus, based on an in-house discovery linking MASP1 to antifungal host defence.

This project aims to transform groundbreaking research into a viable startup company within a three-year timeframe in Bio Studio. You will work at the forefront of antifungal immunotherapy, alongside two senior scientists, generating the human and mouse immunology data that decide which construct moves forward - in a disease area where current treatments still fail the most vulnerable patients. The team is three people today and will be four with you.

Specifically, you will play an instrumental role in the following role responsibilities:

  • Run flow cytometry, ELISA and our A. fumigatus killing assays, and help extend them into primary human cells and the immunosuppressed setting - for example corticosteroid-treated monocytes
  • Run the cytokine and activation readouts, including multiplex cytokine release
  • Run the immunology readouts from our mouse studies: immunophenotyping, cytokines and fungal burden
  • Keep the assays in good order: controls, reagent and sample tracking, SOPs, and troubleshooting that keeps results reproducible
  • Present your data to the team and write it up for reports and publications

Your daily work and well-being will be shared directly with the Entrepreneur in Residence, but as a small community with close ties and bright minds, you should be prepared for many cross-functional and inspiring discussions that can help shape your work at BII.

Professional & Personal Qualifications

We seek a colleague who is driven by purpose and dedicated to bringing science to life. Ideally, you bring the following competencies and skills:

  • A qualification in immunology, biomedicine, biotechnology, laboratory technology or a related subject - a BSc or MSc, or a Danish laborant or bioanalytiker education, are all equally welcome
  • 5 years of laboratory work since qualifying, preferably in industry
  • Knowledge of routine laboratory techniques: flow cytometry, ELISA, cell culture and qPCR
  • Organised: you keep records others can follow, and you notice when a control looks wrong
  • Comfortable in a small team: you plan your own week around the experiments, keep your reagents and consumables in order, and get things moving without waiting to be asked
  • Nice to have: experience with antibody or Fc-fusion therapeutics, fungal work with Aspergillus or Candida; functional assays with live pathogens; work with patient-derived samples; mouse work with a licence or equivalent training;
  • Proficiency in English at a professional level, both written and spoken
