Junior Patent Engineer
Universal Robots
Do you want to be part of the innovation process, from the first idea to a granted patent? Join Teradyne Robotics and work side by side with the engineers who create tomorrow's collaborative and autonomous mobile robots and help secure the protection of their inventions.
Why this role is important
Following inventions from idea to granted patent. You will work with our engineers early, help them recognize what is new in their work and take part in shaping ideas into inventions worth protecting. You will then follow each invention from the moment it is conceived to the grant of a patent, through drafting, filing and prosecution. You will see how a solution develops, and you will understand it in depth.
Playing an important role in protecting our inventions. Patents are central to how Teradyne Robotics protects its technology and its position in the market. You will run the process from invention to patent, and your work will directly shape the strength of our patent portfolio.
Understanding the technical and the commercial “why”. You will work close to technology leaders and product managers, and you will see the technical and commercial strategy behind our decisions. You will understand why we protect a particular invention, which markets and products it supports, and how it fits our competitive position. That insight makes you a better patent engineer, and it makes your advice count.
What You Will Do
You will join a small IPR team, and work closely with the IPR Manager, a certified European Patent and Design Attorney, who will guide your work and mentor you. Your main tasks will be to:
- Run the invention-to-patent process: scout inventions, advise inventors and help them with invention disclosures, and prepare inventions for decision
- Perform prior art searches and patentability assessments
- Draft and file patent applications, including priority filings and PCT applications
- Prosecute applications in the national and regional phase and instruct external patent counsel in foreign jurisdictions
- Carry out freedom-to-operate investigations and report your findings to the IPR Manager
- Take part in trademark work, including collecting evidence of use together with our marketing and sales colleagues around the world
- Support other IP tasks assigned by the IPR Manager.
You have a master's degree in a scientific or technical field relevant to robotics, such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, software or physics. You are curious about technology, and can discuss robot arms and autonomous mobile robots with engineers at a detailed level. You also want to understand the business behind the technology.
In Addition, You
- Have 2-3 years of hands-on experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications, from a patent consulting firm or an in-house IP function
- Communicate clearly, in writing and orally, with engineers, business colleagues and the IPR Manager
- Work in a structured and analytical way and can describe complex technology precisely in legal text
- Are service-minded, reliable and comfortable handling several cases and deadlines at once
- Are fluent in English.
- Close involvement with inventors, and with the technical and commercial strategy behind our IP
- Direct, daily collaboration with, and mentoring by, an experienced European Patent and Design Attorney
- A varied role with real responsibility and the chance to see your applications through from invention to grant
- A collaborative, international environment in a leading global robotics company
- The opportunity to help build a strong in-house patent capability.
