Research Scientist, Experimental Quantum Photonics

Sparrow Quantum

Sparrow Quantum is seeking an experimental physicist to develop deterministic entanglement sources for photonic quantum computing. You will build and automate experiments on single quantum emitters coupled to photonic nanostructures, taking responsibility for the optical setup, the supporting electronics and the control software, and translate the results into technical direction for device and system development.

Your role

  • Design, build and operate quantum optics experiments combining integrated photonics, cryogenics and single-photon detection
  • Take ownership of the software for instrument control, experiment automation and data acquisition, and keep it maintainable, versioned and usable by the rest of the team
  • Design and build simple electronics and hardware for the lab, such as driver circuits, interface boards, interlocks and mechanical fixtures
  • Contribute to research activities on photonic quantum computing and share results clearly with the team
  • Collaborate with academic and industrial partners in national and European projects

Must have

  • PhD in physics or a closely related field
  • Hands-on experience in an optics lab, in academia or industry
  • Strong practical skills in free-space and fibre optics, lasers and spectroscopy
  • Solid programming skills, ideally in Python, for controlling hardware and automating experiments, and a genuine drive to write good code rather than just enough to get by
  • Curiosity and the persistence to track down problems and refine the final result
  • Willingness to collaborate and deliver results in a clear and structured way
  • Strong focus on the final goal, self-discipline and prioritisation

Nice to have

  • Experience with Git and GitHub, including code review and collaborative development
  • Experience with single quantum emitters, such as quantum dots, colour centres, atoms, ions or molecules
  • Experience with cryostats, single-photon detectors and time-tagging electronics
  • Familiarity with FPGA or real-time control, electro-optic modulators and fast electronics
  • Experience with InAs/GaAs quantum dots and integrated quantum photonics, including waveguides, photonic crystals or cavities
  • Knowledge of quantum information, including multiphoton entanglement, cluster states or photonic quantum computing
  • A track record of scientific publications

What you can expect

  • A central role in building the experimental and software infrastructure of a company at the forefront of photonic quantum computing
  • A high-performance team of highly motivated people working towards photonic quantum computing
  • Contributing to scientific publications and patents
  • Competitive salary
  • Lunches paid by the company
  • The possibility of travelling to our collaborators for new insights and knowledge sharing
  • A steep learning curve in a supportive environment at the boundary between research and industry
