Senior Sea Ice/Ocean Scientist with Experience on Remote Sensing, Model Diagnostics and Evaluation

The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) opens a 4 year full time position for an experienced scientist to work with satellite and in-situ observations to assess the suitability of hybrid-ML/AI and end-to-end data-driven methods to replace classical (physics based) methods in the production of future reanalyses (e.g. ERA7)
Most of the work is carried out in the Horizon Europe project, CHERRI, lead by European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). DMI has a task in the project to lead the activities about evaluating atmospheric reanalysis systems with a particular focus on oceans and the high latitudes, including ice sheets and sea ice. It is expected that you will be the technical and scientific lead on these activities that include developing a system which enables easy assessment of various NWP reanalysis products and on interpreting on the results to provide feedback to the model developers in CHERRI. DMI is a leading European developer and producer of remote sensing products, including surface temperature products for the global ocean and high latitudes, sea ice concentration and emissivity products for the Polar Oceans and you will use these products in the assessment.
In addition, you will participate in the work within the Copernicus Marine Service and the Copernicus Climate Change projects to produce operational and timely updates of the satellite surface temperature products.
You will work in close collaboration with dedicated and highly qualified colleagues in the remote sensing group and colleagues from other institutions across Europe and you will be writing peer reviewed publications and representing DMI in new research projects and in international organizations.
Main working tasks
- Lead the tehnical and scientific development within the HEU CHERRI WP 9 “Work on NWP reanalysis model evaluation and diagnostics”
- Develop diagnostics to assess the ability of hybrid-ML and end-to-end data-driven analysis methods to produce physically consistent earth-system states and trends.
- Lead the communication and reporting to the project on the evaluation and diagnostics.
- Develop and implement a processing code base that will enable multi model validation and intercomparison with satellite products, with focus on oceans and high latitudes.
- Contribute to Copernicus Marine and C3S data processing
- Represent DMI within the international science community through participation in international collaborations and contribute to new satellite missions.
Your qualifications
- Recognized scientist with expertise on NWP/Reanalysis evaluation.
- Experience working with satellite observations.
- Experience with physical ocean and sea ice processes.
- Good communication skills and a scientific publication list.
- Advanced programming skills in e.g. Python (preferrable) orFortran .
- Experience with Linux and GIT
- Good skills in oral and written English.
- Can work well in a team in close collaboration with your colleagues.
The position is in the Danish National Centre for Climate Research (NCKF) at DMI, which employs approximately 80 scientists of which 20 are located in the Satellites and Arctic unit. We have a strong international profile which is also reflected in the many nationalities here and in an English "working language".
Employment and Salary
Will be according to the Danish Law and Agreements, specifically the Collective Agreement for State-Employed Academics (AC-overenskomsten). It will be possible to negotiate an addition to the basic salary depending on your qualifications and experience. DMI offers a flexible working week of 37 hours including a paid lunch break, and six weeks of paid vacation annually. If you come from abroad, there is a possibility for a reduced tax scheme the first 7 years.
