Short Description

The Barge Master is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the immersion pontoon during the Fehmarnbelt tunnel project. The role oversees marine operations, vessel positioning, ballast activities, mooring operations, and crew coordination, ensuring all work is performed safely and in accordance with project requirements and company procedures.

Function Description

The Barge Master leads all marine operations onboard the immersion pontoon and is responsible for ensuring the safe transportation, positioning, and immersion of tunnel elements during the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link Project. Working closely with project management and marine teams, the Barge Master oversees ballast, mooring, anchoring, and vessel positioning activities while maintaining full operational control of the pontoon during offshore operations.

The role is responsible for supervising the onboard crew, coordinating support vessels, monitoring marine equipment performance, and ensuring compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements. The Barge Master ensures that marine operations are executed according to approved procedures, risk assessments, and permit-to-work systems while maintaining accurate operational records and reports.

In addition to operational leadership, the Barge Master promotes a strong safety culture, supports crew development, and ensures effective communication between offshore and onshore stakeholders. The position plays a critical role in delivering safe, efficient, and high-precision marine construction activities.

Requirements

  • Previous experience as Barge Master, Master
  • Extensive offshore, marine construction, dredging, or heavy marine operations experience
  • Valid STCW certification
  • Valid Seafarer Medical Certificate
  • Appropriate Certificate of Competency (CoC)
  • Strong knowledge of ballast, mooring, anchoring, and vessel positioning systems
  • Experience managing marine crews and offshore operations
  • Good understanding of marine safety management systems and Permit to Work (PTW) procedures
  • Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken
  • Ability to work in an international offshore environment
  • Safety-focused and proactive approach to operations
