Data Scientist - Energy Forecasting

Danfoss

The Impact You'll Make

Are you a data scientist who wants your forecasts to run every day on real energy systems — and to see the economic and carbon impact of the decisions they drive?

Join Danfoss Digital Solutions, Utility, and help build the forecasting foundation for the next generation of district energy optimization.

The Vision We Are Building Towards
District heating and cooling utilities are facing their most demanding transition yet — changing production sources, electrified heat, volatile energy markets and a hard decarbonisation mandate

Our vision is to establish a system-level optimization across production, network and demand, so that a utility can operate at the best possible energy-economic value while delivering on its decarbonisation commitments. Forecasting is playing an important role towards our vision

What You’ll Be Doing
We are looking for a Data Scientist to strengthen the forecasting capability in our Utility team. You will work on the models that tell the platform what is coming and take them from idea to production — running daily on live utility networks — closely guided by experienced data scientists who know these systems well.

Some Of The Key Activities Will Include
  • Build and improve energy demand forecasting models (heat and cooling load) across a growing portfolio of utility networks and get them into production with automated retraining and minimal manual intervention.
  • Work on local weather and condition forecasting that outperforms global and regional models at individual network level — a proven differentiator we want to push further.
  • Make forecasting robust at scale: self-adaptive models, drift and anomaly detection, and forecast accuracy monitoring across many networks at once.
  • Blend physics with data — combine physical modelling principles of thermal systems with statistical and machine learning methods, rather than treating the network as a black box.
  • Build and develop the data pipelines your models depend on, together with our data engineering platform team.

The Team
Your main development team is based in Denmark, working with colleagues across several European locations. Beyond your daily team, you join a data science community in Denmark of experienced data scientists working on problems next to yours — production optimization, thermo-hydraulic network simulation, temperature optimization. You will have people to think out loud with, review your models and challenge your assumptions, and you will do the same for them.

What We're Looking For
You are a data scientist who wants to turn messy real-world problems into models that work in production, and who is curious about the physical systems behind the data.

Early in your career? Please apply. We care more about how you think than how many years you have. If you are at a junior level but determined to grow into a deep specialist — rigorous about model quality, curious about how energy systems actually behave, and keen to be challenged by people who know more than you do — we want to hear from you. You will be guided closely by experienced data scientists, and we will invest in getting you there.

On top of that, you should be able to checkmark some of the points listed below:

  • Hold a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant field (mathematics, machine learning, statistics, physics, etc.)
  • PhD degree is a benefit, but not a strict requirement
  • Previous experience of Python as this is used as our main programming tool, together with a solid foundation in statistics and machine learning — from studies, thesis work, internships or professional experience
  • Experience with forecasting and time-series modelling, especially models that have to run in production
  • Forecasting experience in energy systems or electricity markets is a plus
  • Experience with modern data pipelines and cloud-based data platforms
  • Knowledge with C# and C++ is appreciated as some of our legacy solutions are built with those
  • Fluent in English
  • Willing to apply and learn about advanced methodology in the district energy field
  • Interested in blending physical models of heating and cooling systems with data
  • Loving to see your code quickly in action, forecasting and optimising large district energy networks

Location
This position is based in our office in Copenhagen or Kolding, Denmark — Copenhagen preferred. We work closely as a team on site, and we are looking for someone who will be based in one of these two locations.

What You'll Get From Us
At Danfoss, we are engineering solutions that allow the world to use resources in smarter ways — driving the sustainable transformation of tomorrow.

Purpose-driven work. District energy is one of the most effective levers for decarbonising heat. The forecasts you build shape how much fuel is burned, how much CO₂ is emitted, and how much value a utility can capture from flexible operation.

A core capability — and support to grow into owning it. Forecasting is not a side feature here; it is the foundation of the product. You start alongside the people who own it today, and grow into carrying it yourself.

Growth. We value continuous development and encourage it through courses, rotations and career tracks.

We believe that innovation and great results are driven by the right mix of people with diverse backgrounds, personalities, skills, and perspectives, reflecting the world in which we do business.
