Copenhagen, Denmark (Hybrid)

Senior Signalling Engineer

In 2012, Banedanmark, the Danish rail infrastructure, awarded a consortium composed of Hitachi and Strukton Rail with a contract to upgrade the signalling system in Jutland, the Western part of Denmark. This latter consists of approx. 1.200 km of the Danish railway network (60%) to the new European ETCS level 2 System. Since then, Hitachi in Denmark has been working on the design and building of the system in close cooperation with Strukton Rail and Hitachi peers in Germany.

We are currently looking for a Senior Signalling Engineer to join our Signalling Engineering team in Hitachi Rail Denmark A/S.

The Signalling Engineering team covers the development of the signalling solution baseline. This includes signalling layouts, speed profiles, route tables, flank protection, gradients, and balise engineering. The Signalling Engineering team plays a key role in ensuring accurate and verified input data for the entire signalling design lifecycle.

The Senior Signalling Engineer will be responsible for engineering, coordination, verification, and delivery of documentation and data, working closely with internal teams, customers, and validators. The role also includes coordination responsibilities within the team and other stakeholders and will report to the Engineering Team lead in the project. The role requires a strong technical profile with the ability to take ownership, drive engineering tasks independently, and support the wider team as a technical reference.

The position is based in Copenhagen (Ballerup) and includes site visits and collaboration with stakeholders such as Banedanmark.

Key Responsibilities and tasks:

  • Drive the signalling engineering scope, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery of documentation and engineering data

  • Prepare and review technical documentation, drawings, and engineering data in compliance with Engineering Rules

  • Lead and coordinate signalling engineering activities while actively contributing to hands-on engineering tasks

  • Perform and support engineering of ETCS and interlocking data, including engineering tables and data preparation

  • Conduct and contribute to site and signalling surveys, ensuring accurate and validated input data

  • Collaborate in cross-functional meetings and technical reviews

  • Analyse, resolve, and follow up on defects and technical issues related to documentation

  • Act as a key technical interface towards stakeholders and the customer (Banedanmark)

  • Support installation teams and documentation handover, including preparation of installation instructions

  • Ensure consistency, quality, and completeness of engineering deliverables within the scope

  • Provide mentoring and on-the-job training to junior engineers

  • Drive resolution of customer comments and technical clarifications

  • Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes, tools, and ways of working

Skills and experience:

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering (e.g. Electrical, Railway, or similar)

  • Extensive experience (typically 5–10+ years) within railway signalling engineering; ETCS experience is a strong advantage

  • Solid experience with technical documentation and engineering processes

  • Experience with signalling design, engineering data, and railway infrastructure and CENELEC standards (CENELEC EN 50126/29/50716)

  • Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word) and experience with CAD tools and/or Visio

  • Strong analytical, structured, and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

  • Ability to work independently and take ownership, while contributing effectively in a team environment
