The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is inviting applications for a PhD position focused on historical habitat mapping in Switzerland. This project aims to explore the influence of landscape history on current and future biodiversity using historical aerial imagery, remote sensing, and artificial intelligence for image classification.

Requirements

– Master’s degree in environmental science, spatial ecology, computer vision, or a related field

– Strong understanding of land change science

– Knowledge of artificial intelligence techniques for image classification (e.g., convolutional neural networks)

– Experience analyzing large-scale Earth Observation data; familiarity with black and white aerial imagery is an advantage

– Proficiency in statistical computing and scripting languages (such as R, Python, or MATLAB)

– High motivation for spatial data analysis using advanced modelling methods and tools

– Excellent communication and organizational skills, ability to work effectively in a team

– Fluency in English; knowledge of a Swiss national language is an advantage
