The Digital Chemistry Laboratory, under the direction of Prof. Dr. Kjell Jorner at the Institute of Chemical and Bioengineering, Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences, ETH Zurich, invites applications for a PhD position focused on machine learning for photocatalysis. This interdisciplinary group operates at the intersection of chemistry and computer science, with the mission to accelerate chemical discovery through digital tools, including machine learning and artificial intelligence.
Project Overview
The research will develop chemistry-informed machine learning models to predict the selectivity and reactivity of energy-transfer-catalyzed photocycloaddition reactions. The models aim to provide mechanistic insights and generalize selectivity trends across various reaction conditions and substrates, ultimately creating user-friendly predictive tools for synthetic chemists. The project is conducted in collaboration with the German Priority Program “Utilization and Development of Machine Learning for Molecular Applications – Molecular Machine Learning” (SPP 2363) and the group of Prof. Dr. Frank Glorius at the University of Münster.
Requirements
– Master’s degree (or expected completion before September 1) in chemistry, chemical engineering, computational science, materials science, physics, or a related field
– Proficiency in English
– Programming experience in languages such as Julia, Python, or R
– Self-motivation, ability to work independently, and a solution-oriented approach
– Interdisciplinary and collaborative mindset
– At Least One Of The Following
– Experience applying machine learning in research projects or thesis
– Experience in quantum-chemical simulations from research projects
