About the Role:
Leads the development and execution of sustainability strategies within a defined topic area or industry vertical, delivering measurable impact for Maersk and society. This role drives complex, high-value sustainability initiatives that mitigate environmental, social, and economic risks while unlocking growth opportunities aligned with Maersk’s purpose and strategic ambitions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Development: Design and implement sustainability strategies at the Group or Business Unit level, ensuring alignment with overarching corporate goals and industry-specific needs.
- Commercial Integration: In Business Units, identify and drive commercial opportunities by engaging customers and shaping external sustainability frameworks that influence future business conditions.
- Thought Leadership: Lead the development of one or more sustainability themes, proactively identifying emerging trends, risks, and opportunities to position Maersk as a sustainability leader.
- Program & Project Leadership: Initiate and manage complex, cross-functional sustainability programs involving internal stakeholders and external partners, including customers and regulatory bodies.
- Capability Building: Elevate internal sustainability awareness through training and advisory support. Provide expert guidance to leadership on ESG risks and opportunities that may influence business planning.
- Process Integration: Embed sustainability into core business processes and decision-making frameworks. Continuously improve existing sustainability tools, methodologies, and reporting mechanisms.
- Risk Mitigation & External Engagement: Address sustainability-related risks through proactive mitigation strategies and engagement with key opinion leaders, NGOs, and industry bodies.
- Performance & Reporting: Lead materiality assessments, benchmark performance, and report on sustainability outcomes in line with internal and external standards.
- Communication: Collaborate with Communications to manage sustainability-related crisis response and stakeholder messaging.
- Team Leadership: Develop and lead a high-performing team of sustainability professionals, fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, and impact.
- Industry Expertise: Deep understanding of the shipping and maritime sector, including decarbonization pathways, regulatory frameworks (e.g., IMO, EU ETS), and emerging technologies such as alternative fuels and energy efficiency systems.
- Strategic Leadership: Proven experience in developing and executing sustainability or ESG strategies at a corporate or business unit level, ideally within a global logistics or maritime organization.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Strong ability to influence and collaborate with internal stakeholders (e.g., fleet operations, procurement, project execution) and external partners (e.g., customers, regulators, NGOs, industry coalitions).
- Project & Program Management: Demonstrated success in leading complex, cross-functional sustainability initiatives with measurable outcomes.
- Regulatory & Framework Knowledge: Familiarity with global sustainability standards and reporting frameworks such as GRI, CDP, CSRD, and the UN Global Compact.
- Analytical & Communication Skills: Ability to synthesize technical and regulatory information into actionable insights and communicate effectively with executive leadership and operational teams.
- Team Leadership: Experience building and managing high-performing teams, with a focus on sustainability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
